Pick one option from each row, add your sizes, and that is the whole specification. The sections below explain each choice.

Step 1 of 4 — Grade

Which grade?

Same oak, same sizes — the grade sets how much knot and colour variation shows on the face.

  • Prime oak flooring

    Prime

Clean, even grain and colour with only small sound pin knots. For a clear, modern look where the timber should stay quiet.

  • Character oak flooring

    Character

Sound knots, some colour variation and the odd filled feature. The classic oak look — the grade most buyers picture when they think of oak.

  • Rustic oak flooring

    Rustic

Larger knots, filled splits and strong colour change. For pieces where the grain is the point.

Not sure which grade? Choose “Not sure — advise me” on the quote form and we will recommend one. Samples of each grade are available. More about grading →

Step 2 of 4 — Type

Solid oak flooring or engineered oak flooring?

Both have a real oak face. The difference is what is underneath it.

  • Solid oak flooring oak flooring

    Solid oak flooring

One piece of oak all the way through. It can be sanded and refinished many times over its life, and it is the traditional choice for boards fixed to joists or battens.

  • Engineered oak flooring oak flooring

    Engineered oak flooring

A thick oak face bonded to a stable plywood base. It moves less with changes in heat and humidity, which makes it the usual choice over underfloor heating and for wide boards.

Step 3 of 4 — Construction

Full stave or finger jointed?

Both are solid oak all the way through. The difference is how the staves are put together, which changes the look and the stability.

  • Full stave oak flooring

    Full stave

Each stave runs the full length in one piece, so the face reads as wide, continuous boards. Choose it where the face is on show.

  • Finger jointed oak flooring

    Finger jointed

Shorter pieces are joined end to end with interlocking fingers, which uses the timber efficiently and makes a very stable panel with a busier face. Choose it for painted work, hidden faces and long runs.

Step 4 of 4 — Sizes

Made to your width, height and length

There is no fixed range to pick from. Write every size in millimetres and send it with the quantity.

Width
Board width across the face, in millimetres.
Height (thickness)
Board thickness, in millimetres.
Length
Board length, in millimetres — fixed lengths, or random lengths in a range.

Tell us the area of the floor as well, in square metres, and we work out the number of boards and the cutting allowance.

Questions

Questions people ask about oak flooring

Solid or engineered?
Solid oak is one piece of timber all the way through and can be sanded and refinished many times. Engineered oak has a thick oak face on a stable plywood base and is the usual choice over underfloor heating or for wide boards. We make both — tell us where it is going and we will say which suits.
Full stave or finger jointed boards?
Full stave boards are one piece of oak along their length. Finger jointed boards are made from shorter pieces joined end to end, which keeps them very stable and makes long boards possible. Both are tongue and groove on four sides and lay the same way.
How much extra should I order for cutting?
Add about 10% to the room area for plank flooring. Tell us the room sizes and we will work it out for you.
Do you install?
No — we supply. Everything arrives cut to size, finished if you have asked for that, and labelled to your list, so any competent joiner, fitter or builder can fit it. For larger jobs we can put you in touch with fitters who have worked with our timber before.
Can I get a sample first?
Yes. Samples of the grade and finish are available for a small charge, which comes off your first order. Ask for one on the quote form.
How long does it take?
Standard sizes usually take two to three weeks from order to delivery; made-to-measure work typically three to five weeks from the day you approve the cutting list. If you have a fixed site date, tell us at enquiry stage and we will confirm whether it can be met before you commit.
