Oak Stair Treads — Floating
Thick solid oak stair treads for floating and cantilevered staircases.
Floating stair treads are thick blocks of solid oak with no visible support — each step appears to come straight out of the wall. We make them to the width, height and length of your staircase, in the grade you choose, drilled or pocketed for your fixings if you send the fixing drawing.

Pick one option from each row, add your sizes, and that is the whole specification. The sections below explain each choice.
Step 1 of 2 — Grade
Which grade?
Same oak, same sizes — the grade sets how much knot and colour variation shows on the face.

Prime
Clean, even grain and colour with only small sound pin knots. For a clear, modern look where the timber should stay quiet.

Character
Sound knots, some colour variation and the odd filled feature. The classic oak look — the grade most buyers picture when they think of oak.

Rustic
Larger knots, filled splits and strong colour change. For pieces where the grain is the point.
Not sure which grade? Choose “Not sure — advise me” on the quote form and we will recommend one. Samples of each grade are available. More about grading →
Step 2 of 2 — Sizes
Made to your width, height and length
There is no fixed range to pick from. Write every size in millimetres and send it with the quantity.
- Width
- Front to back of the tread (the going), in millimetres.
- Height (thickness)
- The thickness of the tread, in millimetres. Thicker treads give the stronger floating look.
- Length
- Side to side, wall to open edge, in millimetres.

Questions
Questions people ask about oak stair treads
- How thick should a floating stair tread be?
- Thicker treads give the stronger floating look, and the thickness also has to suit the fixing your stair builder is using. Tell us the thickness you want and send the fixing drawing if you have one, and we will confirm it before anything is cut.
- Can you drill or pocket the treads for the fixings?
- Yes, if you send the fixing drawing. The treads arrive drilled or pocketed to it, so they go straight on. The steel fixings themselves come from your stair builder.
- Which way do I measure?
- Width is front to back of the tread, height is the thickness, and length is side to side from the wall to the open edge. All in millimetres. How to measure floating stair treads →
- Do you install?
- No — we supply. Everything arrives cut to size, finished if you have asked for that, and labelled to your list, so any competent joiner, fitter or builder can fit it. For larger jobs we can put you in touch with fitters who have worked with our timber before.
- Can I get a sample first?
- Yes. Samples of the grade and finish are available for a small charge, which comes off your first order. Ask for one on the quote form.
- How long does it take?
- Standard sizes usually take two to three weeks from order to delivery; made-to-measure work typically three to five weeks from the day you approve the cutting list. If you have a fixed site date, tell us at enquiry stage and we will confirm whether it can be met before you commit.
